But there's something special about going to see work at this venue.

It fosters a strong sense of community and you enter through the door thinking that

something unlikely will happen to you on the inside.

About the programs presented at The Garage artspace

The Garage is the home of

The raw & uncut performance series

The Garage’s ongoing performance showcase series featuring multi-media, contemporary dance, spoken-word, experimental theatre and performance art.

Resident artist workshop A 12 week residency program offering approximately 4-6 hours of free rehearsal space that culminates in a
two night performance. Artists of all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

SPF

SPF (summer performance festival)

is The Garage’s annual performance festival, featuring both veteran and emerging artists. SPF enters its fourth year and in 2009, the festival will feature a three-months-long series that reflects the broad spectrum of contemporary performance in the Bay Area.

(Artist In Residence) is a work-in-progress performance laboratory and rehearsal program at The Garage.

AIRspace was originally created at the Jon Sims Center for San Francisco artists to develop production skills and create new work. Twice a year, The Garage selects queer performing artists or artist groups to participate in an ongoing residency that includes fall and/or spring performance showcases for both works-in-progress and finished works. Some artists are also selected to participate in the National Queer Arts Festival at The Garage in June, to present encore presentations in SPF (summer performance festival) and Open Season in The SF Fringe Festival. Applications are encouraged in performance, dance, theater and/or any other multi-disciplinary art form. After being selected, resident artists spend a period of time preparing their pieces (usually 12 weeks), then present their work either in a shared program with other artists or individually. The final length of the residency is determined during the application process and periodical evaluations during the initial phase of the residency (the first 12-weeks).

The Garage provides:
· Four hours of rehearsal space per week, usually Monday-Friday 10am-6pm
· Publicity and technical support
· A one or two night presentation

To apply, please provide
· A 25-50 word description of your project (description should be appropriate for 975howard.com) and a 300 dpi photo (if one is available) and a 25-50 word biography
· A youtube link of your work (DVD’s are also acceptable)
· A list of times you are available to rehearse (usually 10am-12pm, 2-4pm, 4-6pm)

SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts (Saving Arts From Extinction) is a non-profit, arts-presenting organization that specializes in incubating new performing art through residencies, workshops and performance.

The Garage is also the home for

PUS (performers under stress)

Comprised of Scott Baker and Charles Pike, recipients of Joseph Jefferson Awards for their theater work in Chicago, and Joseph Jefferson Award nominee Valerie Fachman, PUS has been in existence for over 15 years and has been critically lauded for its bare-bones productions of Samuel Beckett plays including Son of Sam I am (an eclectic selection of Beckett’s short works) and original works such as Book Of Mark. Other PUS productions include Anatomy of It’s a Wonderful Life; Robinson Jeffer’s Dead Soldier Walks Home; Glory Hole; Pound Bound; Fun with Dick and Perry; and Jungle of Tongues.
